It is not a need, but rather a choice. For individuals, religion can shape their lifestyles, but for others religion does not matter at all.

Referring to Abrahamic religions, humans need religion if it is practiced exactly how it is in scripture. But this is rare for some reason

I would argue that religion is necessary, culturally at least. Not everyone need abide by it, but it provides many things society does not.
